Swartland Gumtrees
Oil on Board
76 × 38 cm
Stands of and rows Eucalyptus trees are icons of the Swartland. Hardy alien survivors in the hot African sun. Great avenus were planted along the wagon roads to provide shade from the blistering summer sun. These are sadly dwindling. Most farmers had a stand of eucalyptus as a source of poles for fencing and building construction. Apparently these trees were also used as fire breaks as nothing really grows beneath them. They have a stately presence that I felt worth capturing.
